Berlin
8-10 feb: Germany, Berlinto talk about last minute, this would be the perfect example. we wanted to leave maastricht on monday, spend 2 nights in berlin and another night in munich before coming back to maas in time for school again. reached the train station, which is a 25 min whereabouts walk from the guesthouse, and we just made it in time for our train which left for Heerlen and then Aachen. swopped trains there and made another change at Koln. with Carnaval being so big in this part of the world, it wasnt surprising to see these cows, giraffes, bikerdudes, armoured men, harrypotters, fairys, witches, devils sitting in the same cabin as you. had a pastry pitstop at Koln and the pastry shop was full of characters it was quite a sight. like huge halloween party spanning 2 countries.
anyway back to berlin, we got there on tue morning 730am after the loooong overnight train rides. all the changing. actually its pretty safe just that you have to take note of the trains cos all of them are extremely punctual. its very impressive inside, clean and the night trains always seem to get us to the destination quicker! we each took 2 seats and sprawled all over it, but spent a lot of time tryn to get comfortable in the weird positions...
checked into the hotel... silly us booked the hotel near all the tourist attractions, the usual stuff, ie Berlin Dome, a huge majestic cathedral that make the churches we have in singapore look like sunday school. went to Museum Island then made our way to the last standing Berlin Gate. see the pics!! but seemed like a lot of the other museums and cathedrals and squares were being refurbished and were closed for now. sometimes i wonder if guys' sense of direction is always better than us girls. it was chui vs nic today and looks like the above is simply a misconception! made way to Alexanderplatz, the main square of Berlin in the past, and now its made up of hotels, shopping centres and food. its bratwurst, curry bratwurst, mustard bratwurst all over the place. BRATSWURST. i've not eaten so many bratwursts in the past 5 years!
Day 2 in Berlin was wonderful. we found what we had come to berlin for!!! the hip and happening place which it has been labelled! the shops are simply fantastic. a single street with 2 3-storeyed ZARAs and 1 Mango, and 4 H&Ms, Esprit, C&A.... that kept us busy from 1-8pm.
poor nic. he food-hopped while we shop-hopped. total damage for the day was a zara mini, zara top, H&M scarf and pink happy top. ;) shopping makes this girl happy
Day 3, last day in Berlin. spent our last few hours in the beautiful place in the company of the massive history soaked buildings. in the centre of the Berlin shopping district stands a cathedral which was hit during a war, leaving a hole in its uppermost dome. next to it a memorial has been built and in the night sky, it towers above the old cathedral with blue lights illuminating the night time sky serving both as a landmark and contrast between old and new, a theme carried through in my stay in europe so far. its amazing you see these old buildings and towns and realise later they actually have wireless LAN indoors! :) amidst their cobbled streets...
